Running a business now is more difficult, riskier and harder than ever to get the mix right. It's the people you develop, not the things you provide, that are important. My greatest successes have come from moments where I sought help, built a network and took on coaching and learning. I’m a no-nonsense, highly experienced business owner and coach - and whilst accidentally falling into hair as a career, I’m in love with the journey and process, no matter where it takes me.
My three core strengths are:
- No Judgment - I’ve made the mistakes, paid the fines, learnt the lessons
- Lifelong Learning - I learnt to cut hair before I could read
- Business Development & Rescue - I’ve experienced pretty much every up and down you could imagine!
A bit more about me and my background
After 34 years in a variety of roles, I've had my fair share of experience - positive and negative. After selling my first franchise (only to have it handed back to me from the buyer who struggled to take advice and guidance), I began earning over £20k with as little as 2-3 hours p/w - a huge success for me. Prior to this, I was apprenticed in South Australia and started my first business at 24 as a mobile franchisee. I also did 2 short stints at the Australian Tax Office (which was handy during the VAT raid) and eventually immigrated back to the UK.
I'm hugely passionate about teaching, learning and FE (further education) management - I really love to develop others and watch them grow.
Back in 2007, I opened up Barber Brown, my current business - and over the years, I’ve seen it all! Throughout this time I've worked with both 'self-employed' and 'employed' business models to find out what works best in different situations - I also feel like a bit of an expert in business recovery after going through the motions several times throughout my career. Unfortunately for many salon businesses out there, 2020 means we're going through it all again.
As a lifelong learner, I first engaged with Alan and The Fantastic Hairdresser over 6 years ago and haven’t looked back! I love experimenting with everything I've learnt to find that right mix required to make a business successful.
